The paper deals with the plastic progressive collapse of aluminium square and rectangular tubes submitted to axial loading. The experimental activity performed in the Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Department consists of the measurement of the force displacement diagram for 60 tubes of different geometry. The plan of the experiment is presented. The experimental results are then analysed through the use of the structural efficiency and of the load uniformity parameters suitable for the comparison of the crushing behaviour of structures, taking into account both the geometrical dimensions of the tubes and the mechanical characteristics of the material. The smean parameter confirms aluminium as a material suitable for the energy absorbing structure of a vehicle, even if compared with mild steel structure performances.
