The panopticon was the model of social surveillance aimed at producing subjectivities that corresponded to the demands for discipline of industrial capitalism. This article aims to problematize the concept of the panopticon in light of changes in capitalism from the 1970s onwards, that is, from neoliberalism. It starts from the perspective that neoliberalism is the rationality of contemporary capitalism, with a constructive dimension of social relations that channels the conduct of individuals for the purposes of capitalist accumulation through practices of freedom. In a neoliberal context, the panopticon as an external and moralizing surveillance model lags behind and gives way to self-surveillance practices conducted by the individuals themselves in the eternal search for personal selfdevelopment, which are illustratively manifested in the “voluntary” exposures of users of social media.
