The representation of the contemporary city is as fascinating as it is complex, widely debated, involving multiple aspects (historical, cultural, social, semiotic...), and leaving the field open for exploration and experimentation. The city, compact or fragmented, physical or ephemeral, inevitably involves the concept of stratification: the territory-palimpsest [Corboz 1998], the identity of which is made of its culture, traditions, form, architecture, people. The topic can be approached in many ways and with as many purposes. If one addresses the problem from the viewpoint of the representation, to communicate the identity and to enhance the cultural value of places, it seems interesting - perhaps necessary - to include more and more the concept of complexity in the articulated process of image formation, even in the contradictions that characterize the contemporary city. Therefore, the contrast between the themes of value and disvalue, harmonies and disharmonies, as well as many other thematic ‘antinomies’, are topics that are worth further thinking and that allow experimenting, through representation, possible new forms of dialogue. In relation to the innovative technical and methodological potentialities of representation, it seems interesting to try and explore the expressive opportunities offered by generative graphics, to address the complexity defined by Ugo Volli as “schiuma metropolitana”, which increasingly seems to challenge the visual project in its task of simplification [Bonini Lessing 2010, p. 56]. This essay aims at suggesting some considerations on this domain, to highlight some of the main thematic elements and critical issues, and to propose a methodological hypothesis of contemporary city representation based on generative approaches, with the intent of allowing a more dynamic, complex, and - at the same time - participatory vision of identity.
La rappresentazione della città contemporanea è un argomento affascinante quanto complesso, ad oggi ampiamente dibattuto, che implica molteplici aspetti (storici, culturali, sociali, semiotici…) e lascia aperto il campo all’esplorazione e alla sperimentazione. La città, compatta o frammentata, fisica o effimera, comporta inevitabilmente il concetto di stratificazione: il territorio–palinsesto [Corboz 1998] di cui cultura, tradizioni, forma, architetture, persone, formano l’identità. Gli sguardi con cui affrontare il tema sono molteplici ed altrettante le finalità. Affrontando il tema dal punto di vista della rappresentazione per la comunicazione identitaria e la valorizzazione culturale dei luoghi, sembra interessante - forse necessario - includere sempre più, nell’articolato processo di formazione dell’immagine, la complessità, anche nelle contraddizioni che contraddistinguono la città contemporanea. Ecco allora che il tema del valore accostato a quello del disvalore, delle armonie e delle disarmonie, così come molte altre ‘antinomie’ tematiche possono essere argomenti su cui continuare a riflettere e sui quali sperimentare, attraverso la rappresentazione, possibili forme di dialogo. In relazione alle grandi potenzialità tecnico-metodologiche della rappresentazione, sembra interessante provare ad approfondire le opportunità espressive della grafica generativa per cercare di affrontare quella complessità definita da Ugo Volli “schiuma metropolitana”, che sempre più sembra mettere in difficoltà il progetto visuale nel suo compito di semplificazione [Bonini Lessing 2010, p. 56]. Il presente saggio intende proporre alcune riflessioni sul tema, per evidenziare alcune fra i principali nodi tematici e criticità, e proporre un’ipotesi metodologica per rappresentare la città contemporanea utilizzando un approccio generativo, permettendo una visione identitaria più dinamica, complessa e, al contempo, partecipativa.
