Architettura e Distruzione. Sperimentazioni sui disegni di Lebbeus Woods

The contribution aims to analyze the relationships between architecture and destruction using drawing as the main tool. Lebbeus Woods’ work and his relationship with Neil Spiller are the principal subjects of the text. Wood’s projects for Balkan city, destroyed by war, and the San Francisco Bay threatened by a seaquake are chosen as a case study in that they represent destructive events through the use of expressive and engaging language. These examples represent Wood’s response to the devastation caused by war and natural disasters, underlining the relationship between humans and nature. These issues result highly current and allow us to compare the past with the present, which is represented here by the events of the war in Ukraine and the destruction of the lodge Pian dei Fiacconi. The position of man at the center of the destructive causes leads to reflections on the role of construction in cities and natural environments. Particular attention is paid to the case of the mountain lodge where the destruction changes from the potential state of the San Francisco Bay by Woods to the actual one, transforming the hierarchies between man and nature. Drawing is the tool used to make this expressive analysis and is implemented by augmented reality to arouse greater involvement by the viewer.

Nel presente contributo si analizzano le relazioni tra architettura e distruzione impiegando come strumento principale il disegno. L’opera di Lebbeus Woods e la sua relazione con quella di Neil Spiller sono il soggetto principale del testo. I progetti di Woods per le città distrutte dai conflitti dei Balcani e per la baia di San Francisco minacciata dal maremoto vengono scelti come caso studio in quanto rappresentano eventi distruttivi mediante l’impiego di un linguaggio espressivo e coinvolgente. Questi esempi rappresentano la risposta di Woods alla devastazione causata dalla guerra o da calamità naturali, evidenziando il rapporto tra essere umano e ambiente. Queste tematiche risultano fortemente attuali e consentono di porre a confronto il passato con il presente, che viene qui rappresentato dagli eventi bellici in Ucraina e dalla distruzione del rifugio Pian dei Fiacconi. La posizione dell’uomo al centro delle cause distruttive induce a riflessioni relative al ruolo della costruzione in città e in ambienti naturali. Particolare attenzione viene posta al caso del rifugio montano dove la distruzione muta dallo stato potenziale della baia di San Francisco di Woods a quello effettivo, trasformando le gerarchie tra uomo e natura. Il disegno è lo strumento impiegato per compiere questa analisi espressiva e viene implementato dalla realtà aumentata per suscitare un maggior coinvolgimento da parte dello spettatore.
