Abstract

This study was dealt with the development of polymeric adhesive systems to be used in innovative junction processes based on friction stir welding (FSW) technology, and in particular on the hybrid technique FSW-bonding, for joining elements composed of metal alloys. The addition of suitable additives, such as inorganic fillers, to the most promising formulations was aimed at obtaining materials not only leading to a stronger adhesion between the phases, but also characterized by improved thermal properties and good resistance to oxidation and chemical attacks. Furthermore, due to their relevance in the naval industries, studies on structural adhesive containing expandable reactive agents designed to lose adhesiveness due to heating due was performed. These materials incorporated into adhesive systems promote the disassembly and/or repair of bonded structures favoring recycle for ensure a high environmentally friendly. An innovative strategy for structural adhesive joint debonding by using an infrared heating system and the utilization of thermally expandable microparticles (TEMs) was studied.
