The present contribution aims to provide an overview of Benedetto Croce's early philosophy and its relationship with Neo-Kantianism. Starting from his very first philosophical essay, "La storia ridotta sotto il concetto generale dell'arte" (1893), the work focuses on the connections of Croce's philosophy with Herbart and the Herbartians, Dilthey and Simmel, ending with an examination of the reflections which led the Italian philosopher, after his crucial dialogue with Windelband, Rickert and Kuno Fischer, to the publishing of the "Estetica" (1902) and the "Logica" (1909).
