Abstract

Archaeometric investigations on ceramics manufactured in the area around Pisa have enabled us to define the specific compositional and technological characteristics of each production process, and to evaluate the changes in the sources of raw materials and the processing and firing techniques over time. While in Etruscan era there were only a few potteries scattered along the Serchio, it was only in the Roman and the Medieval era - especially for ceramics with glazed coatings - that the fine clays from the Arno were extensively exploited.
