The essay follows Carlo Tenca’s intellectual and artistic journey in the light of his relationship with the Countess Maffei and the cultural direction of his important literary salon. Based on his conspicuous epistolary, on the theoretical writings and on various narrative works of the Milanese author, the essay shows how the bond with Clarina, from the second half of the Forties to the unification of Italy, favored his departure from Mazzinian radicalism and the adhesion to the Cavourian and Liberal moderate program expressed by the magazine "Il Crepuscolo"; this political evolution coincided with an artistic turning point for Tenca, who, while not denying Manzoni's authority, sought a more popular literature and, above all, the overcoming of the "historical" tale in a "civil" and "social" direction, tied to contemporary reality.
