The purpose of this essay (which introduces the collection entitled Verso l’Italia. Itinerari prussiani tra Settecento e Ottocento [Towards Italy. Prussian Itineraries in the 18th and 19th Centuries]) is to explore and problematise the topic of odeporic literature in its potential. In particular, after outlining an assessment of the studies on travel literature, the essay identifies an avenue of research that has not yet been studied by critics – i.e., the Prussians’ experience of travelling in Italy – and redefines the complexity of the genre while suggesting a theoretical reorientation.
