The aim of this work is to analyze war propaganda not only as a literary category but also as a linguistic act. In the light of some examples of war propaganda during the first world war , we will try to show how the propaganda construction is the stratification of psychological, cultural and rhetorical strategies. In particular, the present work will focus on the opposition between Austria and Italy, considering also other countries and other propaganda episodes which go beyond writing and which concentrate on figurative arts. The present essay is composed by three parts. In the first one, we will focus on the contribution given by propaganda to the idea of “Modern”, following the example of European figurative arts and, in particular, of Austrian and German ones. In the second part, we will investigate some examples of “popular” propaganda; in particular, we will analyze some verses created at KPQ and addressed to both civilians and soldiers at the front. In the third part, we will focus on press propaganda. The linguistic structures, the position of the words and the rethorical figures used in persuading strategies will be carefully investigated.
