Le parole dopo la morte. Forme e funzioni della retorica funeraria nella tradizione greca e romana

Since Antiquity, the word has been assigned the task of accompanying the delicate and crucial moment of death. The present volume, which contains the Proceedings of the International Conference "Words after death: forms and functions of funerary rhetoric in the Greek and Roman tradition", proposes a reflection on the verbal expressions that in the ancient world were linked to mourning and its rituals and , in particular, on those forms that had an explicit codification in the rhetorical-literary field: from the threnos to the epigram, from the funeral oration to the consolation. The proposed approach focuses not only on the characteristic and distinctive aspects of each of these forms, but also, in a broader perspective, on the trends and functions that unite them in their nature of "words after death".

Fin dall’Antichità, alla parola è stato assegnato il compito di accompagnare il delicato e cruciale momento della morte. Il presente volume, che raccoglie gli Atti del Convegno Internazionale "Le parole dopo la morte: forme e funzioni della retorica funeraria nella tradizione greca e romana", propone una riflessione sulle espressioni verbali che nel mondo antico erano legate al lutto e ai suoi riti e, in particolare, su quelle forme che conobbero un’esplicita codificazione in ambito retorico-letterario: dal threnos all’epigramma, dall’orazione funebre alla consolatio. L’approccio proposto punta l’attenzione non solo sugli aspetti caratteristici e distintivi di ciascuna di queste forme, ma anche, in una prospettiva più ampia, sulle tendenze e le funzioni che le accomunano nella loro natura di ‘parole dopo la morte’.
