Abstract

This study concerns the representation of suburban areas of German cities in contemporary Gertman fiction. Literary texts by Anna Katharina Hahn, Martin Mosebach, Ralf Rothmann, and Silke Scheuermann are analyzed by way of a semantic approach that examines the lexical, connotative and metaphoric vocabulary employed to reproduce atmospheric and social characteristics of modern suburban life in German urban contexts. This approach illuminates the ideological positions of the younger generation of German writers regarding social divisions of urban topography in the wealthy and impoverished peripheries of urban conglomerates.
