While the use of social networks is increasingly permeating all sectors of our society, there is still a lively debate about their advantages and drawbacks for learning, especially inside formal educational contexts. This study investigates the opinions of Italian university students on the perceived effects of the use of social networks on their learning, identifies the main factors involved in influencing these effects and correlations between these factors and students' characteristics (such as age, gender, field of study, use of technology). Results show that the positive effects are widely recognized, especially the possibility to easily and readily access information and communicate with peers, but the negative aspects, and specifically, the risks of becoming addict and loosing concentration, are also clearly perceived by the respondents
