Abstract

Local growth is a major leitmotiv of contemporary society. Although it’s strange to see, after more than two centuries of industrial process’ centrality, how urban development programme and social organization systems related to it have led agriculture and rural areas to an increasingly marginal role. Looking at the history and thinking about the future of our cities, it’s worthy to speculate on the theme of urban agriculture not only as a remedy for the current crisis, but as a way of re-thinking, on one hand, a more sustainable way of conceiving urban environments and design issues, on the other, more articulated food systems that consider the contextual issues and the needs expressed by different lifestyles.
