This monograph wants to be a reconstruction of L.T. Hobhouse (1864-1929) liberal vision, especially showing how it tends to emancipate every aspect of human existence from any kind of oppression, from familiar to economic and political oppression. Accordingly, civil, fiscal and personal liberty cannot be conceived apart from social, economic and domestic liberty. For Hobhouse liberalism stems from a mix of liberties which revolves around the core concept of a human being that cannot be reduced to economic or political dimensions. Hobhouse' critique of authoritarianism is based on an anti-dogmatic and tolerant approach to the problem of truth.
