The proposed theme, «The Idea of Europe in the 18th Century», is a clear contribution to the debate on the European identity and provides the opportunity to discuss the cultural dimension of the actual integration of the Old Continent. The creation of the European Union and the progressive interdependence of the European States have raised serious questions about the existence of a distinctive European identity. If there is something that distinguishes all Europeans, no matter what their national or local differences are, what is it? This book tries to address this question in essays that discuss issues of politics, economics, religion, culture, literature, and science.

Abstract

The proposed theme, «The Idea of Europe in the 18th Century», is a clear contribution to the debate on the European identity and provides the opportunity to discuss the cultural dimension of the actual integration of the Old Continent. The creation of the European Union and the progressive interdependence of the European States have raised serious questions about the existence of a distinctive European identity. If there is something that distinguishes all Europeans, no matter what their national or local differences are, what is it? This book tries to address this question in essays that discuss issues of politics, economics, religion, culture, literature, and science.
