After a century of anthropological research and from the standpoint of ethnopsichiatry, Freud's "Totem and tabu" can be read anew in its historical value and limits. The paper first presents the "internal history" of the text and then discusses Freud's interpretation of incest, animism and totemism in the light of new available data.
