This volume covers the last decade (1760-1771) of Metastasio and Hasse’s production, consisting of five drammi per musica and three feste teatrali, commissioned by both the Imperial Court and that of Saxony and Poland. On one hand, it examines the dramaturgical devices used and the ideological background to the librettos; on the other, it offers insights into the music and its functions, accompanied by a wide range of examples. The model of Metastasian opera is here portrayed in the brilliant splendour of its twilight years, shortly before its definitive decline.
