In ancient Genoa pharmacists, who at that time were called apothecaries, started to join together into a guild, with well established rules, already in the Middle Ages. The guild’s role was, besides defending the interests of the medical profession, to provide rules to master pharmacists in order to guarantee the correct preparation of medicines, which were commonly made to order from herbs with medical properties.
