This paper deals with interlinguistic interpreting and mediation meant as akin disciplines. They have been meeting in academic and professional practice in our country for more than a decade, but the results are often of non-communication. This paper is the result of a long process of research, training and job experience in these fields and develops as an attempt at refuting some prejudices and legends behind these two disciplines, giving evidence taken from both experimental, field research projects and training to interpreters. Along the various paragraphs, by using the technique of apparent dichotomies (i.e.: Words vs. Cultures, Cultures vs. Techniques, Neutrality vs. Impartiality, etc.), the author tries to reach a dialogue between interpreting and mediation, giving some practical examples and proposals as well.
