This book, the result of a national research project, considers some major and minor figures of British and international Modernism from an unusual perspective—their wanderings and displacements in alien surroundings (especially the Middle East) as reflected in – and sources of -- their writings. A team of senior and junior scholars from Europe and Japan fill out the map of Modernism by taking us to G.W. Steevens’s Sudan, E. M. Forster’s and Lawrence Durrell’s Egypt, Apsley Cherry-Garrard Antarctica, Vita Sackville-West’s Persia, Robert Byron’s Oxiana, D. H. Lawrence’s Mexico, Rose Macaulay’s Turkey, Essad Bei’s Baku and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Japan. Through contact with other cultures, religions, and landscapes these writers in different genres (fiction, journalism, memoir, verse etc.) gained new insights and new departures to the literature of the twentieh century.
