This paper examines the different attitudes of Nordic linguists and scholars towards foreign words through the centuries. It has been included in the proceedings of an International Congress of Scandianvian Studies (“The North and Europe. Scandinavian Identity and Cultural Relations with the Continent through the Centuries”) that the author himself organized 2003 in collaboration with Gianna Chiesa Isnardi. The Congress had an interdisciplinary character and was open to various themes and disciplines (from fiction to the arts, from history to the theatre, from religion to anthropology and so on – see Table of contents). The author is also editor of the proceedings.
