Abstract

We are living in a historical period for which is said that there’s “less to do”: but really it is a period when there’s “more to do”, much more, because the entire system is involved in the crisis. The things to “re-think” are many as well. Choices are needed; it is necessary to question us on how to act to improve the fundamental aspects of our society, from the sanitary system to security, from education to employment, from housing to the environment. A new approach to problems is needed, and here comes the contribution of design, changing the observation viewpoint, changing the perspective. Instead of a converging approach where choices are made progressively to eliminate the possible alternatives to a determined problem, the idea is to promote different approached of divergent type to explore more alternatives and create, for a specific subject, a set of opportunities. What changes the point of view radically is the way in which the problem is formulated. It is often the design question that induces a convergent kind of solution, in line with the existent. It is about knowing how to formulate a new question, acting processes that are capable of exploring possible alternatives and generating different opportunities. A change is not necessarily a revolution. A process that nourishes through a series of abilities, like observation, listening, taking care, being capable of creating connections, responsibility and cultivating a vision.
