During the 18th and the first decades of 19th century, fishing was an important traditional activity of Ligurian coastal communities, together with farming and small-scale trade. Although fishing was often characterised by low incomes, precarious occupational and living conditions, in some cases it became an important economic sector capable to develop other activities, such as curing, packing and barrelling fish, or making and mending fishing boats, nets and other equipment. The first aim of this paper is to outline the evolution of fishing in the Ligurian coastal communities using information on boats and fishermen. The second aim is to investigate the organisation of fishing units, with special attention to remuneration, labour conditions and profitability.
