Within the vast lexicographic production of the first half of the nineteenth century, the Dictionnaire national de Bescherelle is a noteworthy example of an extensive work offering extremely rich vocabulary coverage. Although historical linguists have occasionally expressed disapproval of the dictionary, one cannot overlook the importance to both readers and contemporary writers of this lexicographic repertoire – one of the most frequently perused at the time. In order to highlight some of its outstanding merits, two main features have been given special attention in this study: firstly, the treatment of synonyms, that has been compared with other coeval dictionaries; secondly, a careful analysis of its political vocabulary, maxims, quotations and aphorisms has shed some light on the evolution of the way of thinking of the author and his age.
