The virtuality of representation and its perceptive concretisation by Cristina Candito ............................. Historical evidence shows how every discipline evolves on the basis of its objectives. Descriptive geometry had been thought to be off this list for a long time and was unchanged in its corpus based in projective geometry and its subsequent methods of representation of space in the plane. The main objectives of the disciplines were also present in Gaspard Monge, in two aspects which can be summarised in the objective representation of space in the plane and in the ability to analyse the characteristics of the represented subjects. These aims, it goes without saying, are not only a sterile list of the common and individual projective characteristics of the various methods, but embrace the applications aimed to the knowledge of the object. In addition, the development of the discipline has included new topics; among these there are the shadow theory, the study of lines and curved surfaces and, obviously, the innovations brought about by information technology. Undoubtedly projective geometry allows explaining the scientific genesis of every single method of representation and its potentialities on the basis of their invariable characteristics as regards the real object. For example it is easy to see how orthographic projections are suitable for transferring metrical information, whereas perspective is not good for the purpose, as it needs rendering procedures which are not intuitive We must recognise, though, there is some relativism in this scientific truth. In fact the projective classification and the perceptive interpretation must be put side by side, in order to understand the communicative value of every graphic work. As for transferring the figurative message, the orthographic projections are the least suitable method for a three dimensional perception of the represented object, whereas axonometry, and still better perspective, allow a better understanding of the spatial depth. Then perceptive considerations must be integrated with the cultural aspect. Actually the ability of interpretation changes through time and the study of the history of representation becomes necessary. On considering the influence of the new computer technology, it must be pointed out how the creation of the projection of the drawing is a successive phase to digital modelling. Moreover, representation is enriched by the fourth dimension in animations or in the simultaneous presence of manifold points of view. The new ways may help to understand the real object, but projective and perceptive rules must be known and respected not to betray the communicative potentialities of the drawing in advantage of conjuring effects poorly useful from a cognitive point of view. Someone thinks that the digital revolution has brought about some consequences in the variety of projected forms (fluid and biomorphic). It must be remarked the possibility of simulation of unreal spaces, both utopian or immaterial ones, reconstructions of situations that no longer exist, still nonexistent, or never existed, or rather the ability to file data for documenting architectural resources. Here, we will try to exemplify what we have said for one of the subjects belonging to descriptive geometry: the theory of shadows. .............................
