The aim of this paper is twofold: first, to provide a critical reconstruction of the debate between the two great Italian intellectuals, taking place from the Twenties to the end of the Second World War; secondly, to single out the conceptual link between the concepts Croce and Einaudi were discussing about and the Rawlsian fundamental issues of “liberalism of liberty” and “liberalism of happiness”. In this sort of “reading Croce and Einaudi from the point of view of Rawls” will emerge that in fact Croce was quite near the first, Einaudi rather near the second category of liberty, considered as a premise of the first one
