This article concentrates on Daniele Chiarella, a legendary Genoese impresario of humble origin, who succeeded in funding a family dynasty of impresarios and created a little but powerful empire of theatre enterprises in Genoa and Torino. The first aim is to divide legendary facts from real ones and to reconstruct the main passages of Chiarella’s life on the basis of new documents. In the second place, the focus on Chiarella allows to bring up some general considerations about organization dynamics, proprietary structures and managing private theatres, multifunctional entertainment halls and early cinemas in late 19th and early 20th century Italy, as a result of increased cultural consumption by the middle classes.
