Abstract

During the last years, the development of grid-oriented tech- nologies has been revamping the idea of using virtual laboratories both for education in schools and universities, and for the training of profes- sionals. In this new scenario, the model of hands-on experience can be implemented reducing the need of physical machineries, thus removing inherent boundaries and limitations. Nevertheless, this reduces costs, and promotes the sharing of exclusive resources. The idea of using remote in- strumentation for education and training is a challenging one, from both the pedagogical and the technical point of view. In this perspective, the authors present the architecture for the usage of distributed simulation and emulation facilities for training personnel, as well as for scientific research, resulting in a novel grid-supported collaborative learning envi- ronment.
