The author examines the debate about State and Religion in the Italian Constitutional Assembly in 1947. She outlines how the lay principle was already in the background of the compromise on art. 7 Cost. reached by DC and PCI inside the Constitutional Assembly. Since then, we had to wait untill 1989, when the Italian Constitutional Court said that the lay principle is a supreme principle of the Constitution.
