Studi su Erennio Modestino. Profili biografici

The book aims to reconstruct the biography of jurist Modestinus. We have little reliable evidence on him and we don't even know his origin. It has been researched in his operas the signs that could delineate his personality. The evidence are the frequent use of Greek language, the mention of places in the eastern provinces, rather than the reference to principles stated by Greek intellectuals. It has been inspected the relation with his law teacher Ulpianus, who influenced the initial career and the first operas of his studiosus. The career of the lawyer is analyzed through an anonymous inscription which is supposed by some scholars to be attributable to him. It has been analyzed with criticism the hypothesis of Tony Honoré on the office of a libellis. The last traces of jurist are in the reign of Gordianus III, but signs of his influence are found in anonymous pupils, who work at the imperial chancellery, and in Arcadius Charisius.
