The aim of this paper is to assess whether Heidegger’s notion of Thrownness (Geworfenheit), originally designed for human existence, can be extended also to animal life. Following Martha Nussbaum’s intuition that also animals are thrown into the world, we will explore the many senses in which animals’ mode of Being can be defined as thrown. The proposed reinterpretation of Heidegger’s notion of Geworfenheit will help to evaluate strengths and limits of the vulnerability approach in animal ethics.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to assess whether Heidegger’s notion of Thrownness (Geworfenheit), originally designed for human existence, can be extended also to animal life. Following Martha Nussbaum’s intuition that also animals are thrown into the world, we will explore the many senses in which animals’ mode of Being can be defined as thrown. The proposed reinterpretation of Heidegger’s notion of Geworfenheit will help to evaluate strengths and limits of the vulnerability approach in animal ethics.File in questo prodotto:
