The first written description of Rübezahl is part of the so-called Walenbücher, itineraries set mainly in the Krkonoše Mountains and other Central European ranges that were widespread between the 15th and 18th centuries. The style is that of a kind of mountain guide addressed to seekers of precious stones and metals, indicated with alchemical symbols, but they also contained astrological indications on the best days for searching. The authors themselves are believed to be Italian, sometimes specifically Venetian.
