The main sources for reconstructing the biography of John the Baptist and the historical environment of his preaching are the gospels and the references in the works of Flavius Josephus; apocryphal texts and legends integrate the information and provide a picture of this saint considering the evolution of his interpretation in popular beliefs and in the cultural landscape. This article brings together official and popular sources related to the life and death of John the Baptist in order to provide for him a picture as complete as possible.

Abstract
The main sources for reconstructing the biography of John the Baptist and the historical environment of his preaching are the gospels and the references in the works of Flavius Josephus; apocryphal texts and legends integrate the information and provide a picture of this saint considering the evolution of his interpretation in popular beliefs and in the cultural landscape.
