The term ‘Arlecchino’ derives from Germanic languages. According to its etymology, it is linked with the ‘Herrla’: dwarfs of popular Silesian folktales. As first demonstrated by Propp, folktales reflect elements of archaic traditions: the oldest written evidences of Harle- quin, including those of Ordericus Vitalis, Pierre de Blois and Walter Map, are connected with the ancient folklore motif of the wild hunt. The word ‘Herrla’ can be found in the German dialect of Silesia and in those of its neighbouring regions.
