The songs of the Neidhartian tradition hold a particular position in the history of German Medieval lyric, especially due to their formal and thematic innovations compared to traditional love poetry. In terms of content, Neidhart’s main innovation lies in the transposition of the basic constellation of courtly love lyric into another lyrical world that deviates from the traditional setting of fictitious courtly love scenes. In this, Neidhart introduced new roles as that of the rustic competitor to the lyrical self. The rural environment is evoked, among other things, through the names of these rustical characters. Neidhart’s songs stand out from traditional love poetry, also due to the use of proper names. In the present study the function of names and onomastic catalogues in the Neidhart tradition is investigated with respect to the many anthroponyms included in the song Der widerdries.
