The essays contained in this volume refer explicitly to Pierre Nora’s studies on lieux de mémoire, which have made us crucially aware that the faculty of memory is closely linked to specific places. And they refer implicitly to the so-called Spatial Turn, the peculiar ‘victory of space over time’, which has become an important interdisciplinary paradigm in recent decades. We begin from these points of departure and focus on the capacity of the visual arts to stimulate, or represent, the memory-work demanded by contemporaneity; the connection between art and physical place, and the commitment, implicit in artistic creation, to testify to ethical responsibility in the face of History.

Abstract
The essays contained in this volume refer explicitly to Pierre Nora’s studies on lieux de mémoire, which have made us crucially aware that the faculty of memory is closely linked to specific places. And they refer implicitly to the so-called Spatial Turn, the peculiar ‘victory of space over time’, which has become an important interdisciplinary paradigm in recent decades. We begin from these points of departure and focus on the capacity of the visual arts to stimulate, or represent, the memory-work demanded by contemporaneity; the connection between art and physical place, and the commitment, implicit in artistic creation, to testify to ethical responsibility in the face of History.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
