Abstract

The organisation of the territory is the result of different types of policies, in which a variety of actors interact, continuously reconfiguring intervention spaces. The reality of Liguria is here analysed through four situations chronologically separated, but sharing a common aspect of reduced visibility and poor effectiveness of their castles. Protagonist of the work is Genoa, in the 10th and 11th centuries, both in defining its surroundings and in establishing the cornerstones of coastal territorial expansion in the 12th century. Protagonists are also powerful noble groups that in the thirteenth century reshaped the rural settlement structure and an inland village investigated up to the modern age.
