The article presents a contrastive overview on gender neutrality in German in comparison to English, Italian, Russian and Finnish. The investigation deals with various situations regarding gender neutral language in the different language communities and cultures. Moreover, it focuses on different approaches of reforming the morphological system as well as on their dependence on grammatical conditions. The concluding section discusses some proposals for transforming critical elements of German into gender neutral expressions without affecting comprehensibility, clearness and orthographic norms.
