In this paper, I will discuss how archeology could investigate the social dimension of the landscape, that is, to read in the landscape how relationships change not only with environmental resources, but also between social local groups and actors. I will try to do this by focusing on the evidence of the changes in the ways through which local communities and social groups of appropriated and defined their space. The words of the title – common lands, practices (of environmental resource management) and local knowledge – are the nodes around which my reflection is articulated. I will start my reflection on what I consider the theoretical-methodological nodes of the social dimension of the landscape: possession, jurisdiction and environmental dimension of practices. Starting from the perspectives of rural archeology, I will discuss a path to archaeological explore the jurisdicional dimension of the management practices of resources, starting from the consideration of their materiality. This path also allowed us to deepen the eminently material dimension of the practices to share environmental resources (sharing practices), which characterized the resource management systems of the ancient regime and led us to try to explore the social effects of material changes in the practices themselves. Keywords: possession and jurisdction, rural archaeology, enviromental resources, sharing practices, abandonment.
