Abstract

This chapter discusses literary multilingualism. Many writers choose to use a language that is not their mother tongue, while they at the same time employ other languages. There are different reasons for such literary multilingualism: some writers come from multilingual regions or families, while others have migrated across national and language borders, either voluntarily or as a result of persecution. The authors' choice of language can be a literary and/or a strategic move.
