The essay analyzes the roots, emergence, popularization and diffusion of the concepts of "West," "Western," within European and American medievalist historiography in the early 20th century. In particular, it focuses on the role that Roberto Salvini (1912-1985) played in this historiographical, art-historical and archaeological debate and the specific quality of the contribution he made to the international historiographical debate on these issues from 1951 onward.
