Abstract

The geography of tourism in Liguria is closely connected to the infrastructural development of the coast which over time has determined the evolution of landscapes and movements, an epitome of the Mediterranean. From the Grand Tour to the discovery of the first seaside resorts; from the development of the coastal railway to the promotion of the Ligurian Riviera as a holiday destination; from the urban sequences stretching along the lines of the viaducts and the coast, to the speculation of mass tourism and second homes. Palimpsest of flows and traces with the ability to metabolize and to increase its form, despite everything, up to saturation. Travel as a method for capturing precise explorations of a territory as an archipelago. Today the Ligurian hyper-city represents a research focus with a double-step vision: to study the new settlement migrations and the reinvention of the coastal public space, as an attraction and continuity element capable of triggering design solutions for different approach to tourism issues.
