Starting from an examination of the peculiarities of ancient Greek diplomatic practice with respect to the systems in use in monarchical and autocratic regimes of the same epoch, the essay aims at highlighting the connections between the Greek model of oral and public diplomatic communication and the world of culture, by analysing in particular the figures of the intellectuals who were sent as ambassadors by the Greek poleis in the Archaic and Classical periods.

Abstract
