In this short essay, through the description of three recent works by Polish artists (Zuzanna Hertzberg, Roman Stańczak, Katarzyna Krakowiak) I wish to highlight three different ways of Memory-Work through the visual arts: a performance or «art action», a sculpture, a sound installation. Poland is probably the country in Europe where the discourse on historical memory is most dramatic and topical, and where the historical policy of the current government is most pressing and intrusive. Even when this is not immediately apparent, these works therefore represent an active stance in the collective, “political” discourse of the nation.

Abstract

In this short essay, through the description of three recent works by Polish artists (Zuzanna Hertzberg, Roman Stańczak, Katarzyna Krakowiak) I wish to highlight three different ways of Memory-Work through the visual arts: a performance or «art action», a sculpture, a sound installation. Poland is probably the country in Europe where the discourse on historical memory is most dramatic and topical, and where the historical policy of the current government is most pressing and intrusive. Even when this is not immediately apparent, these works therefore represent an active stance in the collective, “political” discourse of the nation.
