In the present paper, we presented a general overview of the main architectural and structural typologies of social housing to determine the main characteristics, vulnerabilities and critical situations affecting this kind of buildings and to identify the possible retrofit methodologies to adopt. As a general remark, the Italian social housing heritage consists of constructions with reinforced concrete or masonry structures mainly carried out during the first decades of the 20th century and often characterized by poor material quality, degradation phenomena and the absence of specific structural details necessary to face horizontal seismic action. Retrofitting operations can be executed following the prescriptions imposed by the current standards, taking into consideration not only the structural but also the architectural, functional and efficiency requirements, thus improving the performance of the construction, compatibly with the needs of users.

Abstract
In the present paper, we presented a general overview of the main architectural and structural typologies of social housing to determine the main characteristics, vulnerabilities and critical situations affecting this kind of buildings and to identify the possible retrofit methodologies to adopt. As a general remark, the Italian social housing heritage consists of constructions with reinforced concrete or masonry structures mainly carried out during the first decades of the 20th century and often characterized by poor material quality, degradation phenomena and the absence of specific structural details necessary to face horizontal seismic action. Retrofitting operations can be executed following the prescriptions imposed by the current standards, taking into consideration not only the structural but also the architectural, functional and efficiency requirements, thus improving the performance of the construction, compatibly with the needs of users.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
