Regio Design works on the subject of the conceptual interpretation of territories through the design dimension with images, diagrams, maps and analysis, as well as their mutual influence between perception, evaluation and scenarios in the large spatial scales of the metropolitan regions. The Hanover - Braunschweig - Göttingen - Wolfsburg metropolitan region has been chosen as the case study of the LUH Seminar for the Spatial planning course with a specific focus on polycentricity and urban-rural cooperation within the European Master of Territorial Development. The application of design tools and concepts for Regio Design is under the motto “Places to connect”. Quality of life and socio-economic perspectives are closely related to spatial quality, to the characteristics and recognizability of places. Mapping, branding and visioning are some of the working methods used with the students. The challenge of how participation and engagement in strategy development can be strengthened is the background to a twofold question: Which new forms of spatial perception are interesting and necessary in order to “connect places”? How can the perception of space help drive strategic processes? With the mapping of fields of action and spatial fundamentals, scenario and visioning tools, Regio Design presents approaches for discussion that are intended to stimulate a creative perspective for large-scale cooperation.
