This book chapter provides a unique exploration of the documentary response to the Grenfell Tower Fire in West London in 2017. It argues that while immediately after the fire network television represented the local community only superficially and with a voyeuristic gaze on the human tragedy, the large number of activist and community-based documentaries from the ground at Grenfell contributed to a shift in the media agenda towards a more thorough representation of community responses. This is exemplified in later documentaries such as Ben Anthony's BBC-produced "Grenfell" (2018).

Abstract

This book chapter provides a unique exploration of the documentary response to the Grenfell Tower Fire in West London in 2017. It argues that while immediately after the fire network television represented the local community only superficially and with a voyeuristic gaze on the human tragedy, the large number of activist and community-based documentaries from the ground at Grenfell contributed to a shift in the media agenda towards a more thorough representation of community responses. This is exemplified in later documentaries such as Ben Anthony's BBC-produced "Grenfell" (2018).
