«Human development for everyone requires inclusion of all in the development discourse and process» (UNDP 2016: 16): the global scenario shows numerous signs of intolerance, exclusion, and deep conflicts in social coexistence. There is a need to consider the challenge of developing societies that embrace diversity and pluralism in the face of inequalities. An inclusive society aims at promoting both individual and social growth by enhancing everyone’s full active participation in social life, irrespective of age, sex, race, ethnicity, disability, origin, religion, economic, or other statuses. Because we understand social inclusion as a process of improving the terms on which individuals and groups take part in society, our focus is on the study of factors and social mechanisms that cultivate both abilities and opportunities for disadvantaged groups.
