The Preface briefly retraces the history of the evaluation of the University in Italy, highlighting the different approaches and critical points highlighted by them. The importance of the research, aimed at detecting the effects on researchers’ behaviours following the implementation of the evaluation system by ANVUR, is underlined, as well as the importance of the empirical support given to sometimes overly ideological theses.
